I find that FAT32 mounts on everything, but I can't stand the 4GB file size limitation. And NTFS works these days, too, but I've seen some very crazy write patterns from NTFS-3G and family (write a ton of data to an NTFS-3G mounted partition, then run a MyDefrag analysis in Windows and look at the disk map).

Nice idea, underst8. I wanted to share my setup, which allows for three (or more) operating systems as well as a shared storage partition that they can all access. The trick is to install OS X to the fifth partition. So it looks like 1) EFI, 2) Linux boot, 3) Windows, 4) Storage, 5) OS X 1, 6) Linux, 7) Linux 2, 8 ) swap, etc...I find that you must first partition the drive with 6 partitions (all HFS journaled) using the Disk Utility GUI on the OS X install cd, and then use the gpt command in Terminal also on the OS X cd to get everything resized and formatted correctly. You may need to delete and add partitions, but do not modify partition 5 for OS X- it needs to survive so makes sure that it is the size you need when creating it in disk utility. When I tried to just partition it all using gpt instead of first using disk utility, or changing the OS X portion, the MBR portion of the disk doesn't survive.Anyway once you get the hang of it it only takes 5 or 10 minutes to prepare, and its incredibly convenient to be able to share data between all operating systems without having to resort to an external drive or thumb drive.

Thanks for the killer article. However, I will grant that it’s a little bit different and thus slightly harder than normal to do on a Mac. You can just use Boot Camp to install it super easily if you want instead of Windows, but every time you turn on your computer the little button will say Windows since that what Apple thinks you’re using Boot Camp for. And what if you want to have Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux? Well, you could use Boot Camp again and just have the Windows button go to a second boot loader to let you choose between Windows and Linux, but that’s lame. So here’s a guide on setting it up so that your computer will present you with the options that actually say Mac, Windows, and PC. And it has pretty icons to go with them, too. That’s important, right? Right?
