Acid 3: The Race Continues
by Steven NoonanThe Acid 3 web standards-compliance test has been up for a while now, and there’s no release-quality browser in existence yet that fully succeeds at the test.
Let me explain what these results are telling us before I show them. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops standards for Internet applications. For example, XHTML, HTML, CSS, etc. Acid 3 basically takes a lot of W3C’s newer standards and tests to be sure that the browser supports the features it should and that it behaves as it should when using them. Acid 3 is a collection of 100 different test suites to be sure that these standards are being met. So when I say that browser X gets a score of 55%, this means that browser X passed 55 of the 100 test suites.
Updated August 28, 2008. Decided it was time for an update. Outdated entries are italicized and grayed. New entries are not italicized. It’s a work in progress, and it may be a while before I have all the entries updated. It’s worth noting that Safari 4’s public beta passes Acid 3 without breaking a sweat. Safari 4.0 may well be the first release-quality browser to pass Acid 3!
Updated September 7, 2008. Added Google Chrome to the list.
Updated May 19, 2009. Decided to get up to speed with some of the browsers. Not a lot has changed, though Opera’s latest release puts it in the lead as far as officially-released browsers go. Note that I do still accept submissions/requests. This list may be really out of date now, but I’d like to bring it up to date. Any help is graciously accepted. If you submit a result, please include a summary including the operating system version, browser version, and Acid3 score as well as a screenshot of the result (mainly just as proof for browsers I can’t personally verify the results for).
Updated June 11, 2009. Safari 4.0 was released on June 9, 2009. This makes it the first official release of a browser to have 100% on ACID3.
You can use this table of results as you please, but I would appreciate if people would not just copy/paste it everywhere, because the results will outdate fairly quickly, and I would like this table to get updated more frequently. So please link back to here instead of simply copying this entire table. Thanks!
Note: Italicized lines are tests which were done a long time ago, and no longer represent the current release (beta or otherwise) of the browser.

I guess it really comes as no surprise that Internet Explorer is currently in last place. But really, how did Internet Explorer 7 and 6 do worse than v5.5?

I was under the impression (though never really believed it) that IE8 would score relatively highly on the new ACID tests as MS try and convince us that they care about standards …
I really didn’t expect to see it out do Safari or Firefox, I’d hoped that there would be a notable increase.
The 5.5 out performing ie6 and ie7 illustrates just how much MS intend on helping the standards effort, I think they know they’ve gone too far down the proprietry road to turn back without loosing face/customers.

I tested Galeon 2.0.3 on Mandriva One 2008. I got a 51%.
Midori 0.0.6 on the same system crashes reliably at around 7% on the count up. It’s a hard crash of the app back to the desktop.

It seems WebKit Nightly r31090 brings Acid3 test score to 92/100, inching little by little to 100/100.
I find it curious that some tests fail based on how long some test takes, so this is also a performance test for mixed JavaScript/CSS based animation, and that any Acid3 compliant browser will be able of a very decent animation performance.

On Vista 32 bit Opera 9.5 (9841) gives me 76, and it’s more likely than 77 because 9815 build scores 65 tests + 11 Acid3 fixes according to http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2008/03/18/happy-easter is 76.

Opera still the fastest for Windows at least
Opera Wingogi fully passes Acid3 for ~3 sec. And WebKit-r31386 hardly deals with 4.5 sec.

Update: Acid test for Opera mini 4.1 on SE K600i
Acid1: Quite good, only text is renderered as tight column,
Acid2: Pass more than 50% test, down half excellent, upper half of face disordered, but eyes are good
Acid3: Score about 2 to 4 points, poor ;(

Firefox 3.1b2pre nightly (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1b2pre) Gecko/20081016 Minefield/3.1b2pre), from which I post this comment, shows 92/100 (on WinXP). Yesterday’s build had only 89. Only these tests failed:
Test 71 – doc.open is not a function
Test 72 – doc.images is undefined
Test 74 – contentDocument failed for referencing an svg document.
Test 75 – anim.beginElement is not a function
Test 76 – expected ‘0′ but got ‘100′ – Incorrect animVal value after svg animation.
Test 77 – expected ‘4776′ but got ‘5560′ – getComputedTextLength failed.
Test 78 – expected ‘90′ but got ‘0′ – getRotationOfChar(0) failed.
Test 79 – doc is undefined

A little update to my previous comment: it appeared that my nightly Firefox 3.1b2pre itself actually was passing test 74, it failed it in my first experiments because of AdBlockPlus add-on. With AdBlock turned off, it got 93/100. Today’s build (Gecko/20081019 Minefield/3.1b2pre) keeps the same results (93/100).
Opera’s latest official release, 9.60 (build 10447) makes 85/100 (failing tests 02, 10, 18, 20, 29, 33, 43, 46, 47, 70, 71, 79, 84, 97 and 98). Both browsers (and Chrome as well) pass test 26, but too slowly (FF – 115ms, Opera – 62ms, Chrome – 87ms, while it has to be not more than 33ms to reach 30fps, needed for animation to be smooth enough).
